Flyers Alumni Assist on Snider Hockey Goal

On an annual basis, the Philadelphia Flyers Alumni Association donates time and money to a wide variety of charitable and community-based organizations throughout the Delaware Valley. Now the Alumni are providing a key assist to financially support the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation in the construction of a future ice rink in the Delaware Valley.

Currently, as part of an ambitious plan to greatly expand access to the game, Snider Hockey plans to construct new rinks in Germantown, Mantua and South Philadelphia. The organization expects to break ground on its next site in 2016.

In order to provide an assist to the Snider Hockey rink-building goal, the Alumni have pledged $2 million toward the construction of the rink. The new facility will be called the Edward M. Snider / Flyers Alumni Ice Rink.

“The Flyers Alumni would like to show our appreciation to Mr. Snider, who has made such a vast impact on our careers and lives, by making this pledge,” said Brad Marsh, who jointly serves as Flyers Alumni Association president and as the Flyers director of community development.

"We know that Snider Hockey is going to be his legacy, and we want to be a part of that, so that we can provide a future for the boys and girls of the Greater Philadelphia Region and carry out Mr.  Snider’s mission. It is one way for us to simply say thank you.”

According to Marsh, the decision of choosing Snider Hockey as the beneficiary was an easy one.

On February 11, 2016, the Flyers Alumni presented a symbolic check to Scott Tharp, the president of Snider Hockey, who will be joined by student-athletes from Snider Hockey. The presentation took place at the Wells Fargo Center.  The likes of Flyers President Paul Holmgren, Bernie Parent, Bill Clement, Bob “the Hound” Kelly, Brian Propp, Dave “the Hammer" Schultz, Joe Watson and Chris Therien were also on hand along with Marsh.

The nuts and bolts of making good on the pledge will from the Alumni donating proceeds from a series of signature fundraising events.

The kick-off fundraising event, the recent Flyers Alumni Game at Santander Arena in Reading, PA, raised $85,000 thanks to the efforts of Flyers Alumni from every generation of franchise history. Later this year, the Flyers Alumni Golf Invitational (July 18) and the second annual Flyers Alumni Fantasy Hockey Camp (Aug. 19-22) will be among the crucial fundraising events toward the $2 million donation to the Snider Hockey rink project. A host of new and exciting events will be announced soon.

“This commitment by the Alumni will help us further our dream of creating a new multi-purpose ice rink with classrooms and community rooms to help support our programming,” said Tharp. “Our mission is to build lives and unite communities, and with this generous pledge, we look forward to helping even more student athletes succeed in the game of life.”
